The town of Hida-Asahi has a long history spanning back hundreds of years to even before the foundation of modern Japan.  Historically, it has been extensively used as part of the passage that connected the city of Takayama with areas to the east through the mountains.  Because of this, you will find many shrines in Asahi that once served as places of respite for those travelling the tiring journey on foot.  

Moreover, thanks to the natural bounty of the forests that surround Asahi, this place has long been home to many craftspeople and carpenters who utilize the trees and lumber of the region.  To this day, many still practice their artistry in Hida-Asahi!
